Name: JOEE JOHNSON
Mission: TO RETIRE FROM BEING A CHIMNEY SWEEP TO MAKE MUSIC FULL TIME
I’m constantly amazed at the talent which The Spiralling has introduced me to. It’s been so interesting getting to meet new people through the internet. Joee Johnson got in touch with me and asked if I’d like to write a feature on him.
Joee grew up in a bed and breakfast in St.Ives in Cornwall. “I was always surrounded by music and always had a guitar hanging about, so writing songs first happened in a natural way and I didn’t set out to be a singer songwriter.”
From a young age he was covering music from Velvet Underground, The Beatles and other Folk music which helped form Joee’s original sound. “I started playing guitar and writing songs because i believe that you can make something incredible and something that can last for ever with the resources around you, also I play as an outlet for express like all art forms are.” Also as Joee’s music is heavily poetry based taking influence from William Blake, Alfred Tennyson, Aleister Crowley and novelist Oscar Wilde. “My inspirations have always been authors or the people around me, extracting their personalities and making them into songs.”
After previously being in bands Joee decided to start putting a Blues/Folk sound to poetry. “I was playing weekly slots at bars, cafes and clubs to help towards solidifying my original sound. I play all original material.”
At the young age of 20 Joee has a long way to go in his musical career but he has already had some moments to be proud of . ” I played at Colston Hall and at the live show for this years BBC 6 Festival. This year was also awarded with No.8 Unsigned E.P charts in the Unsigned and Independent magazine.” Joee has also had numerous reviews in Subculture and other music magazines.
Currently Joee is living in Bristol and is continuing to do shows around the area and in Brighton. He has started making plans for a UK Tour in 2017. If you’d like to hear more of Joee’s music check out the links below.
